I’m going to borrow a term from the NCAA Basketball Championship: It’s March Madness time! I have no idea why the NCAA came up with that term, “March Madness,” but for me, it fits my current state of affairs. My birthday is coming up in several days and this year I’m turning 65 – and this momentous turning point has me hyperventilating on the brink of giddy “madness.” How is this possible? My age implies I’m old, but I sure don’t feel that way! Plus, my dear daughter turns 30 on the same day – she was born on my birthday, which was quite a present! But how can my sweet baby be turning 30?!!!
All the platitudes about wisdom, and that time is an illusion, and the sweet compliment my hairdresser gave me yesterday (“you look about 52), God bless him, isn’t really helping me ease into my “old” age. I know, on paper, that I “should” move into it gracefully, humbly welcoming Medicare and the senior discount at the movie theater. Actually, I am very grateful for these things! But I’ve got a few days left until the big day, and I am going to kick up my heels and go a little nuts. I’m going to enter this new phase with all the rebelliousness I can muster. In the words of the great poet Dylan Thomas, “Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light.”
Thank you, Dylan Thomas! I love your words, even though the Light does not die; we may turn away from the Light, but it’s with us until it’s time to move on from Earth world. Dylan Thomas is reminding us to truly live fully, to relish this immense thing called life and courageously take it on with great gusto and spirit! In the time I have left here, my intention is to live with passion, great health, joy, faith, and the rebellious spirit I was born with. And so I shall…
