This much-asked-for city circle is launching on Tuesday, July 18, from 7:30-8:45pm at Moving Life Studio, 5115 N. Ravenswood Ave., Second floor, Chicago, IL 60640. It will meet once a month, on the third Tuesday of every month. Thanks to the generosity of the lovely Moving Life Studio in the Andersonville neighborhood of Chicago, where we will meet, this circle is free, with love offerings welcome (money collected will go to Moving Life Studio, in gratitude and support for their hosting). The circle will be led by Paula Rosenfeld and Betty Giannopoulos. We will share the powerful, new Golden Orb meditation and there will also be a chanting meditation, both guided meditations, to raise the kundalini, awaken and clear the chakras, and deepen your personal connection to what is sacred to you, . No experience with meditation or the Oneness Phenomenon is necessary! The Oneness Phenomenon is non-denominational and experiential by nature. If you are in the Chicago area, we hope you will join us for this beautiful community experience!

Hi, are you already galloping toward summertime? I know I am! Here in Chicago we’ve been enjoying weather bliss this week, with lots of sun and nature a’bloom. Hope you had a good Memorial Day weekend. Now is a perfect time to honor your own inner-soldier.
It feels to some of us that 2017 has been one long battle to maintain inner peace and harmony in a world gone pretty darn crazy and unstable. Violence, politics, chaos, the environment…hot issues that steal our sense of safety, grounding, connection, and peace.
I’m offering you a chance to quickly reconnect with the “home” within – that place where you can always find refuge, comfort, and connection. Your Inner Essence at “home” is steady. It is not combative. It knows only one truth, and whether you call that truth Love, Peace, God, Spirit, Higher Self, or Consciousness, its nature is bliss, peace, and higher intelligence. Connecting back to “home” is reconnecting with the beautiful flow of life – of miracles and joy, your birthright.
Connection to our inner “home” can get lost in the shuffle of distractions, stress, other people’s energies, confusion, and collective fear. Even thinking too much, and certain foods and environmental toxins can affect our energy field! We can become unable, or forget how to find our inner balance and peace. To do that, we need to clear out the energy of blocked and stagnant energies in our field, often caused by not fully processing our feelings or taking on the feelings of others. The energy of unprocessed feelings and thoughts clog up our aura and chakras, and can lead to disease, pain, emotional triggers, lack of sleep, unhealthy coping mechanisms, and more. Like a dirty house that needs cleaning, the solution to finding harmony, clarity, and order again is cleaning. That messiness doesn’t walk away on its own!
So how about an offer you just can’t resist? Spend 1/2 hour – or one hour with me over the phone, getting all the layers of your aura and chakras quickly cleared out. You’ll feel lighter, clearer, more energetic, and more present. I’m throwing a sale: Purchase and book by June 16 an energy clearing session done over the phone (that must be used by June 30) at 40% off the regular price. Good as a gift certificate too!
Half-hour energy clearing will be only $45 (a savings of $30) or
One-hour energy clearing will be only $75 (a savings of $50)
As an extra gift, I’d like to offer you a Oneness Deeksha at the end of the session, if you’d like a beautiful transmission of sacred energy.
So start getting your summer glow on now. Contact me to make arrangements at firstname.lastname@example.org or call (773)-791-8425.
One last thing, a gentle reminder that the Chicago Phenomenon & Gift weekend is coming here July 1 and 2. There’s still time to register, but the discount rate for the hotel ends June 9…so don’t delay. You can register for the weekend and get details on the hotel and pricing HERE.
There’s one prayer that I have highly recommended for years, and used in service of creating my own life’s work, but in one certain area of my life, I haven’t employed it. I’ve been afraid to truly let go enough to pray in this particular arena, in this particular way. That arena is romance, and my fear is that if I truly surrender, I won’t get what I want. It’s not my preference to be single, and I’ve tried persistently to change the situation as best I can. As I see it now, even though I’ve prayed for manifestation of a partner in the many various ways that I’ve been taught to pray, it hasn’t worked for a reason. I’ve probably tried to solve the problem from the level of mind that it was created by. As Einstein has pointed out, this just doesn’t work. In my heart, I know there’s one way of prayer that I haven’t been ready to do.
I’ve certainly had my share of extremely significant and precious relationships; each one lasted until they were finished. Not a unique story for many of us. Yet, I found myself, recently, throwing my hands up in the air, and sighing the proverbial, “I give up”. I was at a new level of despair, frustration and, ultimately, surrender – exactly what was needed, evidently, for my Divine to deliver a big, wake-up message.
Spirit’s breakthrough message came to me via a couple of coffee dates that ironically validated the extraordinary power of intention to manifest what we think we want. But what we manifest may not always be what we really need. The dates left me dazzled by Spirit’s notorious sense of humor, and I eventually saw a big flaw in the prayer technique I’ve been using in my search for a significant other.
For example, I’ve wanted to meet a potential loved one who adores animals just as much as I do. Recently, I was requesting of my Divine that this ideal person have a dog or two, since my landlord doesn’t permit dogs. (I’d imagined enjoying them vicariously, so to speak). I’ve been longing to have a significant relationship with some pets! Sure enough, I met someone with two dogs….and six cats too, bless her heart. Unfortunately, I had forgotten to remind Spirit that I have a low-level cat allergy. My own two beloved cats (now deceased) were fairly manageable for my allergy – but six cats would send me over the edge into asthma.
Dating wake-up call #2: Because I have a few food sensitivities, I can be a bit of a challenge (in some people’s eyes) to dine with. But I am so “over” having to justify certain food avoidances to people. So I’ve been asking my Divine for someone who understands and respects healthy, mindful eating. Who did I attract, you’re wondering? I called in a date with a woman with massive food allergies, (which I have deep, deep compassion for), but her severe allergies include both cats and dogs. Darn, I had forgotten to tell Spirit that my ideal partner, though loving dogs, would not be allergic to them, even allergic to non-allergenic dogs!
Trying to stay on top of all my particular specifications and expectations is exhausting. I can’t think of every single angle, polish my prayers, visualize, and expect my Divine not to have a great laugh at my expense! Here is the big “a-ha” that came a few weeks ago: I’ve got this particular idea of who I think will make me happy, and what I think will make me happy… and I’m expecting Spirit to be like a corporate head hunter who will fill the slot with exactly what I believe I want.
It’s like I have a job opening, and I want my Divine to fill it pronto with someone who has all the right qualifications. Like it’s all about me and my wants … What’s wrong with this picture?
What I see is that I have it all backwards. I need to dwell on what I have to offer, not what I want to get. I suspect things would work much better if I follow my own prayer advice and truly surrender. It’s the “truly” that is really hard.
The prayer goes something like this, and you can direct it to whatever Higher Power is sacred to you personally: “Use me. You know my desires, passions, skills and talents, dear Spirit…Let me please be a channel of your love. In service, Spirit, let me be joyful. Let me add to the world’s good. How, and with whom this might manifest is up to you, dear Spirit, so I let go of the reigns and trust in your wisdom and guidance.”
How this will show up in my dating life, remains to be seen. I’ll keep you posted! I do know that Spirit holds a vision for me, and everyone else, which is truly good and life-supportive. It’s a much higher perspective than my own.
And how does this prayer relate to Earth Day? With eyes wide open in an increasingly transparent world, we all are seeing the masses of politicians and world leaders who, in their humanity, have been severely limited by the consciousness they hold. The world’s a mess due to consciousness that has been conditioned by centuries of fear. The structures that we have taken for granted are crumbling in the wake of rising global awareness and dissension. Ugliness and cruelty also abound rampantly, seemingly hopelessly mired and motivated in fear.
We watch now as our beautiful Earth is being destroyed by this pressure cooker called life in 2017, co-created by all of us. Humans have used, manipulated, and transgressed the natural world to serve our own needs. We have forced our will. All the years of mindless taking from Earth is destroying her. Many of us have seen these times coming for years, but have been unable to influence the consciousness of “those” in control of how money is spent to create this lifestyle we share on Earth. We watch in horror. Some of us march with anger or hope.
As in the state of surrender needed for dating help, perhaps you might join me in humbly praying to Spirit today for help for the world. My Divine has me writing blog posts, contacting politicians, protesting, setting an example, going back to school to become an integrative nutrition coach, and of course recycling. I am doing these things, but want to do so much more. I want to experience more than give glaring looks at littered sidewalks, shake my head at unhealthy fast food joints, and walk past grocery stores filled with packaged, processed, sugar-laden saboteurs, waiting to destroy someone’s health and happiness. I want to educate, wake-up others, and transform this life-denigrating mess we’ve created.
I hereby pray, and please join me if you feel so moved, to declare: I humbly offer my love, talents, skills, and passion to make this existence better for my own life, the life of our beautiful Earth, all her wondrous creatures, and the generations to come who might never know a glorious late April day like this one (at the rate we’re going), with flowers and trees a’blooming, water coming from faucets, air that is still fairly breathable, and, thank you Spirit, organically, humanely raised food options in the store … because organic farmers get it. Immense thanks to all those who get the value of life, of all things natural, of love, peace, and beauty… and are living in their truth and not in fear.
What is your prayer today? Can you let go and trust Spirit to use your talents, passion, and actions to give to the world what it needs for transformation? If you feel frustrated, confused, fearful, or blocked, please consider taking a step toward faith and action. I urge you to strengthen your bond with the personal Divine of your heart, whatever that looks like for you – so that you can be led to serve, to give, to be a sharer of Light who transforms this chaos and destruction going on now.
If you are feeling that you can’t really “turn it over” to a Divine that you don’t trust, have I got a recommendation for you! There will be another big Oneness event happening on July 1 and 2, in Chicagoland and other parts of the country. It will be a rare chance to strengthen your bond with your personal Divine by leaps and bounds. It will help you connect, expand, brighten your Light, listen within, take action, and create change with your very own awakening consciousness. The event is called The Phenomenon and the Gift. The teachings are live-streamed from Oneness University in India with highly enlightened teachers. Please check out the Chicago event HERE.
If you want to see other locations in the country and world for this incredibly powerful event, look HERE
For the Chicago event, the deadline for the early registration discount is April 30, so don’t delay. There are even payment plans options available for this event!
Wishing you all a day of awe and gratitude for the Earth… and the courage to trust, to let go, and also to take action where you are Divinely guided.
Oneness Awakening Course, Feb. 11 & 12, at Infinity Foundation, Highland Park, IL.
The Oneness Awakening Course is filled with meditation, chanting, energy clearing, and deep processes to heal many challenges in your life. It also initiates you to give the Oneness Deeksha to others, as well as to yourself. The blessing of this energy transmission is beyond words…to be able to shift someone’s spirit in under a minute – to relieve their suffering – is an immense gift to give. Each Deeksha we give to others, is given to us as well, raising the energy field of the collective to a higher vibration. For current hands-on Deeksha Givers who want to repeat the course, please contact me for special information. To read more about the Oneness Awakening Course and to register, click here.
Many of you, like me, have volunteered on a soul level to be part of the global awakening of the heart. Just living on this planet now, with eyes wide open, is a raw and challenging experience. Thank you for all that you are doing and being. I urge you to be fiercely in favor of the awakening of consciousness. I urge you to live it, to walk your talk and use every tool you can to heal your own relationships and trauma. The world needs us all to awaken to even greater levels of consciousness.
Most importantly, I urge you to live from the inside out: to make your heart your home base, to live your inner Essence and inner truth, and take action whenever and wherever you are spiritually guided. As one of my favorite poets, Rumi, wrote, “Don’t go back to sleep!”
Love and Blessings,
How to be? What to do? How to connect and anchor in these shifting times? If these questions are on your mind, please consider attending the upcoming Oneness Awakening Course at Infinity Foundation on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 11 and 12 in Highland Park, IL (a suburb of Chicago). Out of town? Fly, drive, bus, or train it in – it will be a powerful boost of energy, insight, and growth for your awakening journey. You’ll have the opportunity to go very deep in connecting with whatever is sacred to you (whether you call it Spirit, the Universe, Source, God, etc) – which is what makes it possible to hear clear guidance and manifest your heart’s desires. The course includes experiential, healing processes to break through areas of blockage in all relationships, as well as in financial, health, and career challenges. Plus, you will be initiated to give the very powerful energy transmission that is sweeping the globe – the Oneness Deeksha (also known as the Oneness Blessing). Deeksha is known to quickly catalyze a lifting of vibration, an expansion of consciousness, an opening of the heart, an increase in self-awareness, and a quieting of the chattering mind. You’ll be able to give Deeksha to yourself, loved ones. children, pets, and everyone your life touches! It can be given hands-on or by intention – you don’t need to be physically present with anyone to give it.
My co-facilitator of the course, Savita Laura Jachim, and I were interviewed on the Inner Quest Cable television show this week about Oneness, Awakening, and the Oneness Awakening Course. Savita demonstrates how Deeksha is given in this video. You can watch the taped interview here

Begin with joining a FREE conference call to go on a shamanic journey! Wednesday, January 11, from 7:30-8:30pm, CST. No experience necessary – take a shamanic journey and meet your personal Spirit Guide. It’s easy, relaxing, and powerful too. Got any burning questions? Ask your own Guide! Spirit is always waiting for our willingness to ask for help! Why do you think you have to do this challenging thing called Life all alone? We weren’t built to run on self-will….we are meant to let go and let Spirit embrace us in the flow of life. Does a flower force itself to grow? Does the earth read books on how to orbit the sun? We’ve forgotten that everything we need for happiness lies within. To register for this free shamanic inward journey, contact Paula Rosenfeld at: firstname.lastname@example.org.
And if you like shamanic journeying with a love-filled group, from the comfort of your own home on these cold, winter nights….then I’m hoping you’ll consider joining a 4-week telephonic shamanic group to really create a lasting resolution for 2017. Read on please:
LET GO OF SELF-WILL & FALL IN LOVE WITH YOUR LIFE!
4-WEEK, telephonic shamanic journey group starting Tuesday, January 17 – Feb. 7, 2017, 7:00pm-8:30pm CST, from the comfort of your home. $108 for the 4-class series.
2017 is launching — full of unknown potential, challenges, and tremendous opportunity! If you’re going to follow-through on any resolutions, may I recommend one in particular: Letting go and letting Spirit take the reigns. Whether you want to manifest a fulfilling and prosperous career, to call-in a significant other, to begin a new path, or to heal your body…it all starts by connecting with your Divine Within and ripples outward. Ignite and amplify vibrant self-love now – that is, connect with that love and guidance that the Universe has for you – and you’ll attract the fulfillment that your heart is yearning for!
Once a week, for 4 weeks, we’ll gather together via conference call to work with a personal shamanic Spiritual Guide to catalyze the joy, excitement, energy, creativity, and inspiration of your soul. Each of the sessions will include a talk, meditation, shamanic journeying, and group sharing. No experience necessary. Class objectives:
- Deepen your unique connection to Spirit, build your trust, and clarify your own inner guidance and visions. Shamanic journeying to unseen realms can be a thrilling path of direct, personal revelation – never boring, and so often filled with surprises, synchronicity, wisdom, and intimate communion with your Source.
- Move through fear to break through unconscious upper-limits. Spirit’s got your back! It’s time now to be your authentic self! The world needs that from each of us who hold a vision of peace, safety, fulfillment, abundance, and love for all…Spirit put that vision in place, so let’s allow Spirit to creatively do the guidance and support we crave.
- Bask in the energy of meditation, gratitude, and miracles to create an irresistible field of love and attraction that brings your desires into form.
- Be boldly adventurous and cozy at the same time, with uplifting group connection, spiritual guidance, and support for a profound inward journey.
- Create the ‘fully-alive’ life you want and be powerfully in love with the life you have. This isn’t a dress rehearsal…those who are willing are waking up to an inner calling that’s intensely unique and beautifully perfect…a calling that serves the world. “Don’t go back to sleep”, as the poet Rumi says.
To register, contact Paula Rosenfeld, shamanic healer, Certified Oneness Trainer, intuitive coach, and author of The Oneness Blessing. Paula@fromtheheartcenter.com or 773-791-8425. Limit of 5 people per group….Register now! If you need to miss a class, a recording will be supplied.
And then to keep the momentum going and bring your vibration to a really big crescendo, please consider taking the Oneness Awakening Course that I am co-teaching at Infinity Foundation on February 11 and 12 in Highland Park, IL. This experiential course initiates you to become a Oneness Deeksha Giver, helps heal your relationships, takes you deep into the teachings and the consciousness-expanding experiences of the Oneness Phenomenon. CEU’s are offered for therapists and psychologists. I can tell you it will accelerate your already quickening journey of awakening! For more info and to register, click HERE.
Hello beautiful ones and very lovely and sacred holidays to all! Whatever you are celebrating at this special time of year, I wish for you, and for all of us, the lightness of inner peace. When each of us, no matter what our circumstances, find our way back to the Center Within, there will be the peace on earth that our hearts long to manifest.
I needn’t remind you of what a challenging year it’s been. Many of us are feeling it in our bones, muscles, and organs. Some major illusions have been ripped away, perhaps leaving us confused or frightened. For many, the concept of “safety” has altered dramatically. Many feel restless, anxious, angry, and perhaps very eager to heed the call to action clanging in our hearts. We may not know with clarity what we are being called to do – but we are on alert that change is happening now and full of potential opportunity. As the mystical poet Rumi wrote: “You must ask for what you really want. Don’t go back to sleep!”
What do you want? If you aren’t asleep, you may be truly understanding how poignantly fleeting this particular physical lifetime is. But where to go and how to go, day-by-day, with this understanding? Here are some suggestions/reminders of what to bring into the brand new year:
- Bring your intention to keep going within! Find the inner freedom of peace within every day. You need to make the Center Within your home base. All good flows from there! Establishing a daily meditation or self-reflection time is important. Take your relationships there for inner council. Take your work in the world there for advice and blessings. Take your health problems there for healing. Listen within, then act externally as directed.
- Ask your Higher Self (or whatever you consider a higher Source) to show you both your shortcomings and your talents. Ask for the humility to see yourself with clarity. Edge up close to the darker places where you could have done better or given more. Just see this stuff. See it with non-judgement and open curiosity, as if you were looking at a painting; for you are a work of art, and a work of art in progress.
- Accept these dis-owned parts of yourself with compassion; for compassion is the gift of acceptance. Open your heart to these misguided, fearful, imperfectly perfect parts of yourself. See if you can muster some radical self-acceptance. As you open your heart to yourself, grace comes in the form of forgiveness. With self-forgiveness comes the ability to start anew, each and every day – to let go of the past and release your inner burdens of guilt, shame, and self-rejection! With forgiveness comes new energy, new choices, and the lightness of inner peace.
- Love, love, love this beautiful and horrifying world that’s evolved from the collective unconsciousness. Accept all the people in your life who, if they could have done better, would have done better…for given the unconsciousness and programing that we’ve all inherited, we go through life in various stages of being asleep. Accepting people’s limitations does not mean approval of them. It just means that you aren’t resisting the idea or the fact of them. They exist. What you do with your acceptance is your choice. Acceptance is freedom!
- Know that you aren’t alone. There is a Higher Power for good working within each of us and in the world. There are invisible forces of Light urging us all to grow and evolve. The Light shines through other people, in the natural world, in literature, art, music, all forms of creativity and science … Seek the Light to renew your spirit.
- Be the consciousness you want to see in the world. Baby step by baby step, make daily decisions to push beyond your fear, self-sabotage, and the inability to give yourself over to love and growth and peace. Be a warrior for living life fully and courageously in the face of heartbreak, violence, and death.
- Be grateful. Fill your consciousness with gratitude rather than negativity. Seek the higher perspective always. Keep your eye on the good and let that steer your flight. Affirm the good daily. Let the vibration of goodness lift your spirits, for the energy of gratitude does that. Sometimes we need some help feeling gratitude – reach out for help when you need it. Others can help lift your energy and spirit. We need each other for that!
So fly high, little dove. As you are making plans or resolutions for the new year, please know that I am here to help in whatever way I can. If you are interested in becoming a Oneness Deeksha Giver and/or going deeper- and higher – in clearing and manifesting the life you want, considering taking the weekend Oneness Awakening Course that my colleague Savita Jachim and I are teaching at Infinity Foundation in the Chicago area on Feb. 11 and 12. You can check out a short video we made about the course and register here: This course offers CEU’s for therapists, by the way.
Love to all and wishes for an amazing and truly empowering 2017!
Are you frightened my darling? On top of it being Halloween, a time when the veils between dimensions are most thin, the world seems to be spinning out of control. Along with rampant Cubs frenzy, my neighborhood is littered with skulls arising from still green lawns, bed-sheet ghosts floating above RIP gravestones, and other charmingly deathly décor. But none of these things are as scary to me as my desk stacked high with unfiled papers, reams of never-to-be read emails piling up in my mailbox, dishes in the sink, and the constant ding of texts claiming residence on my cell phone.
I know the speedy intensity of these times is both alarming to some and to others, incredibly exciting and stimulating. There seems to be a regular state of chaos flowing through torrents of unexpected events happening quite regularly most days: Airplane disasters, news-breaking crimes, record-setting storms, relentless Wiki-leaks and cyber-attacks, car, phone and toy recalls, and other endlessly alarming global events. There are also incredible stories of miraculous healings, poignant tales of inspiration and hope, scientific discoveries, and breakthroughs in medicine. There are also so many of us now talking about peace and Oneness, which is thrilling!
Through the media, we hear it all. Are you overwhelmed? Do you find the “unexpected” nerve-wracking or does it excite or energize you? I confess I’ve been in the overwhelmed camp lately.
I’ve been watching the World Series on television. I don’t usually watch t.v. much, but as a Chicagoan, I’ve been feeling anxious for days for the Cubs, and glued to the television each game night…and I’m not typically a sports fan! Still, I’ve been choosing to watch the games, rather than attend to the slew of other things in my home that need doing. There is something incredibly addictive and distracting about the anxiety-inducing World Series and the general chaos going on in the background (called LIFE). Even with an impressive meditation routine (if I must say so myself), and an equally diligent exercise and healthy-eating regimen, I am feeling both hyped up and tired at the same time.
This is coming along with the tsunami of presidential and political campaigns and upcoming election day – so nerve-wracking. Observing the constant tension in myself and those in my sphere fills me with compassion for humanity’s vulnerability; for the speed and quantity of stimulation is so ramped up that many of us seem over-run by it. Lateness, snappish driving reactions, missed appointments, forgotten tasks, menopausal moments, little mistakes, drinking too much, eating too much, not sleeping enough…feeling tired; This is what I observe in people around me.
Are we supposed to be getting used to this intensity as the new normal? Is there really no going back to feeling calm, well-rested, organized, and innocently optimistic?
The other day, I was discussing with someone whether the upcoming winter might be colder than normal, as has been predicted. The woman said, you can look to a horse’s winter coat as a sign – a thicker coat means a colder winter ahead. Evidently, horses are able to instinctively grow more hair. That’s how connected these beautiful creatures are. We are animals; I wondered what my body might subtly be communicating or if I could even hear or see its message amidst the loud clatter of society’s group mind nowadays.
What I know with certainty is that my body is craving orange vegetables; for I had a dream about sweet potatoes the other night and butternut squash the next! That was bizarre and exciting to me because it’s an easy message to decipher: eat more sweet potatoes and squash, which I’ve been doing with pleasure. Either that or the Great Pumpkin has invaded my dream life!
Unfortunately my body is actually communicating very audibly, now that I think about it, when I’m around too many people and too much traffic – which is most of the time. It’s grumbling irritably, “I can’t stand all the noise! I want to be alone!” This particularly high sensitivity lately, despite the usually balancing routines and patterns, alarms me, for being a hermit doesn’t fit my image of living in Oneness. So I asked one of my Spirit Guides, the Cosmic one, for some higher guidance. This is my Guide’s response and I’d like to share it in the event that it might speak to you as well:
“Get real and come down from the clouds. This is your world now. Put one foot in front of the other and slug through this soup of stimulation. It’s a great way to discern what, and who, is yours. You will bounce off what is not meant to be yours – whether people or things – and by letting go of your previous self-image, you’ll end up with a new you, at least the authentic ‘you’ of this moment. Yes, life is speedy now and you can’t keep up with all the change. But open up to it anyway. You’ve lost control of your email and you’ve lost control of your time – in fact, perhaps you’ve lost your very mind. Good for you!
It’s time to go with the flow and don’t judge it. Relax into the roller-coaster ride because, yes, there is no going back. It’s time to let go. All you truly have right now is this unique moment, so enjoy it to the fullest. See your fear of unpredictability. See what falls away. Go easy on yourself. Your life can’t be perfectly organized and efficient if you say you want to live fully. Enjoy your anxiety, your imperfections, and the miracles too – watch it all with humor and appreciation. Don’t resist the flow of life. Oh yes, and breath deeply.”
So it’s that again – breath deeply. Why do I forget that so often? I tend to hold my breath when anxious. Thank you Cosmic Guide; I needed the reminder. We’re all having a human experience … and this is what being human is like now. It’s intense, exciting, scary, and often unpredictable. It’s especially miraculous too!
So pardon me Cleveland, but ‘hey Chicago, what do you say, Cubs are gonna win today!” I’m a sports fan and I didn’t even know it. If that can change, what other miraculous possibilities does the future hold, I wonder! Hello Great Pumpkin, bring it!
“….it can happen to you, If you’re young at heart”. Remember the song that Frank Sinatra and Walt Disney made so famous? If you aren’t familiar with it or would like a boost of innocence, wisdom, and sweet hope, have a listen:
The song is a classic because it speaks to the hunger in so many of us to recapture our innocent joy and the fulfillment of our youthful passion and dreams. Even if your childhood was challenging, as so many childhoods are, perhaps you can remember certain times or activities that brought you great joy and a sense of autonomy — or a connection to something bigger than your family.
For me, getting on my bicycle seems to instantly conjure a powerful memory of joyfully riding my bike alone, at about age 10, to my piano lessons at the home of Mrs. Bonebreak (yes, it was really her name!). She was my piano teacher who lived about 6 or 7 blocks away in our subdivision. I know it wasn’t far, but I guess part of the thrill was feeling a little like a grown-up, out on a mission after school, without parental supervision or my younger sister tagging along.
Perhaps part of the joy was also about my dreams of creating music. In the beginning, I think I had fantasies of being a great piano player someday. Unfortunately, my first big recital, in front of maybe a hundred or more people, was nerve-wrackingly overwhelming and, in fact traumatizing, causing me to toss my dreams of future piano playing. I am not going to blame my parents for letting me quit – been there, done that. And I really wasn’t all that talented, to be honest. Nevertheless, live music can move me now to blissful tears of joy.
But I digress; the point I’m trying to make is that when we are young, we have innocent hope, and we have dreams. As we age, “life” happens to our heart-felt dreams, and they begin to calcify. Perhaps we settle for less than what we had been hoping for. Perhaps loss, disappointment, self-judgment, and resignation creep in, along with hectic schedules, grown-up responsibilities, diminishing physical vitality and just plain not as much fun…need I say more? Can you relate a bit?
As our fun shrinks, so can our gratitude and even our hope. This will surely make you feel and look old. I’m often reminded of that saying that goes something like this: It’s easy to be grateful when you’re sitting down to a feast; but the challenge (and mastery) is to be grateful when you’re starving. How do you hang on to gratitude and youthful hope when the external world isn’t giving you what you are wanting?
The key is to remember to return to feeling “young at heart” by refreshing your spirit when feeling overwhelmed by all the grown-up stuff – the constant bills, the heavy schedules, the inevitable communication problems, the inevitable losses, lack of sleep, disappointment, and more. Feeling young is to be curious, to be open to the new, to take risks, to play, and to be vulnerable. Without vulnerability and some risk-taking, nothing new can come in; you’re only replaying the same old patterns, beliefs, and habits. Life gets small if you lose fun, courage, and hope – please don’t let that happen. Find what puts a “song” in your heart. Here are 7 things I do regularly to keep my heart feeling young:
- I have a daily meditation practice to turn inward; it’s a time for only my authentic, inner experience – not attending to the needs of others or the perceived pressures of life. This is refreshment from the Source! Drinking in the sweet juiciness of the present moment, there’s nothing to do but just BE. The more I drink, the sweeter I realize it is. I also feel blessed that I can give myself Deeksha to quickly connect with this sacred space.
- If I’m so unhappy that I can’t conjure up the will to meditate, I play some of my favorite music to lift me out of dullness or funk. If it moves me to dance or sway a bit, I’ve struck gold!
- I get outside and move the body. One of my big joys is simply taking a walk in a natural setting. Walking can be great meditation, as can any athletic movement – swimming, biking, running. Yoga is great. All kinds of movement get me out of my head and into my body. Bodies are made to move and we can help shift stagnant energy in our auric energy field by moving.
- I feel my emotions as fully and as much as possible. I let myself cry, laugh heartily, love, or feel absolutely despondent. Humans are meant to feel; this, too, shifts stuck energy in our field.
- I create; Creativity is our very nature. For me, it’s writing. For someone else, it might be anything from sculpting, to cooking, gardening, or re-organizing the garage. I recommend doing what makes you lose track of time!
- I call or hang out with loved ones and friends when I’m feeling hopeless or low. Even though it might be your inclination, I don’t recommend isolating yourself when you feel unlovable. Humans need humans, or perhaps an adoring pet, to remind you that you’re not alone in this world.
- I give away my time, talent, and treasures. You’ve got to give it away to have it! When you feel depleted, that’s the time to help someone, somehow. Like it’s said, it’s easy to be grateful at a feast, but when you’re hungry, this is the time to rally – even if you have to fake it ‘till you make it, if necessary. Give!
And here’s a really powerful secret: Give away what you want to receive. It really works. Perhaps you won’t receive what you’re hoping for, on your timetable, and perhaps you’ll not receive it from the source you give to, but do give with faith, as if you have a limitless supply; for in fact you do. The universe is constantly flowing energy, so get in the flow of life to stay young at heart…your fairy tales might just come true!
