Naked Faces, Illegal Hugs & last call for 20% off sale

I took this selfie last summer, when I was experimenting with wearing a face mask due to a troublesome allergy reaction. How eerily prophetic that less than a year later, we are all wearing face masks.

I have come to take a lot for granted. I believe we’re all waking up to that fact. I’ve taken safety for granted. I’ve taken healthy air for granted. And I’m realizing that I’ve taken faces for granted. Beautiful, bare faces — but no longer! Faces reveal so much about us. We are actually quite vulnerable when people see our faces, and I don’t mean just vulnerable to the virus. And how about eyes?  How fascinating and expressive eyes are when they are peeking over masks! Have you noticed?

There’s another thing that many folks take for granted; Some of us single-living folks are not being touched much these days. Typically, we get hugs, handshakes, and so many other pats or platonic touches in our daily life. But now those precious connections are paused. We don’t even accidentally bump into anyone. We’re not being massaged, or routinely getting chiropractic treatments either, unless it’s really essential.  We’re not getting our hair washed, cut and fluffed. Touch-hunger is a real thing, and the body registers lack of touch on physical, spiritual, and psychological levels.

My sister, who lives abroad, told me last week that her young grand-kids finally came over to visit their beloved granny. In their country, there have been very strict rules about traveling outside the immediate home area. But they’d all been missing each other something awful.  So they donned their masks, and as the country’s rules relaxed a bit, they decided to try to safely visit outside. However, in the end, neither my sister nor the kids could resist hugging each other. At least they kept their masks on. “Illegal” it may have been, and hopefully not too risky since they’d all been practicing sheltering-at-home, but the joy felt from it was immeasurable.

Being touched is a crucial need for humans. It soothes anxiety and helps our nervous, digestive, and immune systems. Going without being touched has some big drawbacks. I had to ask myself, as I contemplated my own situation of living alone, what can help mitigate this really fundamental need of humans to feel connection through touch?

I did a little internet searching and found an interesting article in Time Magazine on ways to try to compensate for the lack of skin contact now, in light of Covid-19:

https://time.com/5817453/coronavirus-human-touch/

The article describes how online video chatting, virtual dance parties and online group yoga or exercise classes can aid connection and stimulate hormones being released that are similar to the hormonal stimulation of touch. It’s so valuable to connect with others at this unprecedented time, and thank goodness for online access to other humans.

This is also an incredibly great time to connect deeply, not only with others, but also with your own soul. It’s important to feel compassion for ourselves and for what we’re going through. Don’t isolate from others, and also don’t turn away from the life of your soul. The soul hungers too. The soul cultivates courage. The nourishment we’re seeking now for courage can’t come from cookies, chocolate, alcohol or drugs that might be tempting as we try to escape the current reality. That escapism is human, and let’s be realistic, probably necessary at times, but ultimately, it’s only a temporary band-aid. It can’t be a steady, pandemic diet because it won’t nourish the courage we all need.

It’s such a blessing to connect spiritually with whatever is sacred to you – whether you call it Spirit, the Universe, God, Higher Power, Higher Self…whatever that is to you. So meditate, chant, pray…do whatever you’re called to do spiritually. Especially sweet is to connect with others who are on a spiritual path, which truly feeds that connection and courage hunger in a deeply nourishing way.

Shamanic soul retrieval and extraction, and Akashic Record readings are deeply personal journeys into your soul and what is sacred to you. These sessions bring you back to joy and wholeness, and connect you to your inner guidance, faith – and courage. Only your inner guidance can really inform you of what is healthy for you….and what isn’t. Only your personal guidance can give you the “a-ha’s” that open up perspectives, purpose, and broaden your world. My work is to be a channel of the sacred energies that have all our backs, twenty-four hours a day. I know that as rough as these times are, there is good that is already coming from it, and more on the way if we continue to grow as spiritual beings.

One last reminder: I am offering 20% off my shamanic soul retrieval and extraction sessions and 20% off Akashic Record readings in this month of April.  One week left to schedule an appointment, so don’t delay if you’re looking for more connection, courage, fulfillment and joy! Please contact me for a free consultation to discuss if my services might be helpful for you now. If you book an appointment in the coming week, we can set it up for May.

Be safe, be healthy,

Paula

The ruby slippers and 20% off

The famous poet T.S. Eliot wrote in his poem, The Waste Land, that “April is the cruelest month,” but this year, I’d have to say in the United States, it was March. Even though Covid-19 was raging in China in January, it seems we didn’t grasp the enormity of the pandemic until March, when we were forcefully shoved through an unknown portal which massively changed life — probably forever.  A curtain was pulled back, and we’ve been given an experience similar, perhaps, to what Dorothy encountered in the Wizard of Oz when she got a look at the real wizard, and realized he wasn’t the one who could get her back to Kansas.

Maybe we thought there were adults in charge who might actually keep things running more or less as they always ran. We thought if we played the game of life right, we might somehow predictably ride the train into a ripe old age.  But instead, we’re uncomfortably awakening to the fact that the power to feel safe and happy is not “out there”; it’s actually something we’ve had all along. We’re needing to learn this the hard way, by necessity. We’re being invited to find happiness within ourselves while the virus and chaos rage on.

Please don’t get me wrong, a paycheck and toilet paper are very, very fine things to have now. Scoring some t.p. now, or having a job, is a bit like winning the lottery. But, in fact, we might just have the power within to survive the loss of either.  I will call that power “Grace”.  It’s a spiritual thing, a gift of our Higher Self, and I think many of us now are seeing and feeling immense gratitude for the good we do have in our lives now.  Seeing our good, naming it, and being thankful for it, despite what’s happening externally, is the most important thing we can do now.  It calls in the Grace! Gratitude brings us more to be grateful for; this is spiritual law.

Just as Dorothy discovered that the Wizard wasn’t great at all, we see that the “adults in charge” are seemingly floundering and as vulnerable as we apparently seem to be. But when it comes to staying sane, grounded, safe and hopeful during these difficult times, the truth is that we must, AND WE CAN, find the power to go back home – to a sense of safety and joy.  We have to click our ruby slippers, like Dorothy did, and return to our inner sanctuary, where we find peace, guidance, creativity, joy and safety in the present moment.

The truth is that life has always been unpredictable.  We just were pretty much asleep to the full extent of that unpredictability. But on this almost incomprehensible scale, we’ve been awakened. I feel called to point you back to your spiritual empowerment. There are so many tools and so much Grace available to us, especially in this time of anxiety, fear and loss.  There is wisdom, connection, joy, humor and lots of love. There are people around to catch you – to virtually hug you when no touch is available. Don’t isolate, don’t despair. Instead, contemplate on the gifts of this time and please commit to keeping your spirits high.

It’s crucial to do everything possible to keep your vibration high. Meditating daily, thinking positively, moving your body, and opening your heart are all very good practices to focus on now. Maintaining a high vibration is so important to your health.

Do stay safe and don’t entertain fearful thoughts. It’s such a powerful time to work on your inner world, and the fruits of that inner work will manifest externally in the days to come. We will emerge stronger and better from this time. Be the peace now that we want to collectively create — that we have long been hoping to manifest.

My shamanic sessions and Akashic Record readings are powerful tools to use to heal trauma and deeply guide you into inner wholeness and rebirth. I am offering 20% off these sessions in the month of April. Please contact me if you’d like a complimentary consultation to discuss how these modalities could help you at this time.

Death, Strength & a 20% off SALE

Perhaps if you’re like me, some days you are waking up in denial and other days you are waking up with low-level uneasiness, anxiety, or abject fear. Any of these would be normal now.  I’ve been waking up often with thoughts of “another day in captivity…another day in this weird new world.” Mainly I’m aware that anxiety has been haunting my dreams. So I follow my morning routine for comfort – I go meditate (which quiets the mind and brings me back to joy), and have my lovely green tea and the homemade paleo muffins I make for myself.  To be totally honest, I think it’s the promise of the muffins that helps me most to start the day.

All around us are numbers: Numbers of cases, numbers of deaths. Has death ever been such a daily companion for most of us?  We’ve read about pandemics in other years and other lands. We’ve heard of massacres, tsunamis, and other tragedies.  We’ve had many deaths of friends and loved ones, including those struck by H.I.V. when that broke open, or so prevalently in recent decades, by cancer. But those deaths seemed far away or few between, compared to the possibility that, on a global scale, a huge number of us may currently meet death via Covid19 sooner than we ever imagined…or that we may get that call about someone we love who has a fever and dry cough or was exposed to the virus. Now, death is on our minds a lot.

Death had entered my life in a prominent way in the autumn of 2019, even before Covid19 hit the U.S.  My father became very ill, in October, with heart failure. I thought we would lose him at least three separate occasions during that time. The family fought along with him, when he was in and out of the hospital almost every other week, through every new procedure and attempt to help his heart, lungs, kidney, and digestion rally. We fought with him when he spent two weeks in the hospital, four weeks in a nursing home, and none of it forestalled death much. I’m very sad to say that on March 27, last week, my precious, irreplaceable, father died. Ultimately, at age 92, his body just gave out. His time on earth abruptly ended and he passed away at home, spared of further suffering, and spared of exposure to Covid19, thank goodness.

I had been acutely grieving the potential loss of my father since October, but when he made his transition, I knew it was time to write about death. I know that death is not an easy, topic. It’s not what people are generally offering on the internet now. Those uplifting, virtual talks, meditations, and gatherings are extremely important. We all need to find our way to strength, connection, and hope as much as possible.  But I’m inviting you to also find more ease with death now. I believe it is crucial to the future existence of humanity.

As we befriend our mortality, there are gifts one can never reap while in denial of death’s immense presence; We feel the incredible blessing of life and the need to cherish each one of our days alive. We start to see the pure miracle of each living being and we feel their hearts in our heart. We connect with the glorious wonder and healing of nature, and we humbly awaken to our place in the Universe. We stop taking life for granted.

If ever there was a time to turn inward, to experience life with much more awareness and gratitude, and to explore our true Self, this is it.  Our true Self is our Immortal Self, which shines brightly within this garment we call the physical body. Our Immortal Self knows death because the Self exists in both death and life. That is what real wholeness is. This life we are experiencing is the manifestation of the Oneness of All That Is, and that All includes death.

Our old ways of living are, in fact, dying or dead. We are suddenly in a daily state of loss, — loss of touch and companionship if you live alone, loss of enjoyment and entertainment, like parties, sporting events, movie theaters, and concerts. Children have lost school. We’ve lost whole lifestyles. And as I’ve discovered, there is no satisfying opportunity to have a funeral or memorial service, at a time when we truly need to honor our loved ones who have passed – and we crave the hugs of those who could comfort us, even more than usual.

However, to live fully and to experience our losses with awareness and compassion, we need to walk hand and hand with death. We have to accept that this is the current “what is” of life. Awakening into the complexity, richness and paradox of life, we have to see that there could be no Yin in life without the Yang. There could be no light without the darkness. There is huge darkness now, but there is also huge Light.  To really know both intimately, we have to look within first. We have to see fear in action in the mind. We have to grieve, and to heal our loss and trauma. We have to retrieve those parts of ourselves that got lost in the process of growing older. We have to come back to joy. Otherwise, what we will experience “out there” is a horror show where the monster Fear is the victor. Let us all choose rebirth instead. Take the opportunity now to reconnect with your Inner Light for strength, hope, healing and most of all, to flourish in the future that is now being reorganized.

Know that the course of humanity has been changed. The path we were on has been redirected.  Where does one find strength and safety amidst all this loss and change? You won’t find it in a pile of toilet paper rolls or numerous bottles of rubbing alcohol, or disinfectant wipes.  I’m not saying those aren’t important, because they are. I’m just saying that your strength and safety lies within.

My work is to help you navigate the Deep, Vast Within. It’s my true passion and pleasure to help you explore your spiritual connection, your losses and trauma, and to help you find your strength and ability to flourish in this time of challenge and change.  We need a global rise in vibration, a surge of spiritual empowerment like never seen before.  I offer my services, with all my heart, as your guide and conduit to Spirit, on the journey of awakening to inner peace, no matter what is happening externally. This time is a powerful doorway to tremendous transformation. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to come out of slumber, out of habitual patterns, out of self-limiting conditioning — and make the absolute most of this extraordinary experience called living.

And now for the sale part!  If you’re still reading this, thank you, and I invite you to leap into vaster freedom, even while you are at home. Don’t isolate. Don’t shut down. I invite you into intimate connection with the love of Spirit that you may never have known you needed so much, before now.  Because we all need that now and always have.  My virtual services of shamanic soul retrieval & extraction and Akashic Record reading are 20% off for the month of April.  I’ve been working virtually for 27 years – using phone or skype. Distance is no obstacle to energy work and transformation.

If you’d like to discuss how my services may be a fit for you, please contact me to set up a complimentary phone call, or if you are ready to make an appointment, please email me at:  paula@fromtheheartcenter.com.

Stay home, stay healthy, and let’s get connected!

On Mothering

In the 25 years of doing shamanic healing, I’ve worked with a great many people who needed to find peace within the relationship with their mother. Whether a mother is alive or deceased, biological mother or adoptive, and whether the child is young or grown-up, the mother-child relationship is a sacred, often complicated quest. I think of it as a long, pivotal journey that impacts most of the other relationships in your life—including your relationship with yourself and your Divine. This is the far-reaching and powerful nature of the mother relationship for all of us children.

For many of my clients, whether or not they have been close to their mother or have felt wounded in childhood by her, the relationship with mother is an issue we generally tackle. People seek help who have had mothers who were insensitive, narcissistic, alcoholic, abusive, neglectful, dependent, abandoning, over-worked, absent, suffocating, loving but exhausted, loving but abused themselves by their husbands, loving but themselves victims of sexual molestation, loving but unconscious, and so many other types of mothers.

I’ve never kept a tally, but I can say that most people I’ve worked with have felt in childhood either a recognized or unrecognized yearning for a closer bond, or have struggled with a need to recover from emotional trauma relating to their mother; or both. Furthermore, even if they were, or were not close, and their mother has passed away, there can be layers of deep, deep grief that need to be honored and integrated. Sometimes we lose soul parts when our mother passes away; sometimes mothers take parts of our soul, and usually energy cords and unhealed connections to mothers limit our happiness and fulfillment, as well.

Did you know that babies in the womb are actually affected by their mother’s emotions?  We’re all born into this unique potential for incredible love, connection, and trust with another human being, our mother, or we take on the potential for lack of attachment, lack of self-respect, feeling unloved, and so sadly, feeling unworthy of love.  Is it a role of the dice or fate that determines the impact our mother has on our lives?

I believe we choose our mothers prior to incarnation. We choose our lessons, challenges, and opportunities for soul growth.  But when it comes to making peace with whatever motherly patterns we have grappled with from childhood, or even from past lives, the path of acceptance of our mother is really the place we want to land eventually.  With acceptance, our consciousness raises. With acceptance, our heart opens. With acceptance, we move into peace. With peace there is even the ability to love the unlovable, not only in our mothers, but very importantly, in ourselves.

When we talk about love, we talk about a power that imbues the living with life. To love is to be free of the past, to be in the flow of goodness, and to resonate with a vibration so much bigger than the traumas, childhood perceptions, and stories about our mothers that so often we cling to, well-past the onset of adulthood.

As a mother myself, I’ve been blessed by my daughter’s sacred role as my teacher.  Because of her, I’ve wised up and grown up, mainly because she taught me that real love brings up everything that isn’t love. As I raised her, and as I relate with her now, she is my sacred mirror.  I see my own patterns and conditioning. I watch her as she slowly matures into her own adulthood, and see that no matter how I might trigger her, no matter how she may judge me for my unconscious personality patterns, nothing can really change how much I love her.  And hopefully she feels that way about me. I see that same amazing power of love between me and my mother, despite the years of differences, judgments, and distance at times.

I think this Mother’s Day holiday, as mixed as it may be for people depending on their relationships with their mothers or their children, is a great day to take stock of what needs to be honored, what needs to be healed, what old stories need to be seen, and what still needs mothering within one’s self.  Ultimately, we will all benefit by becoming our own gorgeous, all-powerful Divine Mother; She who lives within our precious heart.  In June, we’ll talk about connecting with our inner Divine Father, for he shall have his day too!

To all who are practicing mothering or being mothered, I wish you the blessings of this Mother’s Day. Not the cheery, Hallmark version, but the hot, molten mother-love that rocks this planet and keeps the stars twinkling in the night sky; the Divine Mother known by all her many goddess names in all cultures and spiritual traditions, all over the world.

Honor the Mother Goddess in you, as well as the earth-bound, possibly un-awakened human goddess who you gave birth to you.  Perhaps you’ll see in her the genetic seeds of Gaia, our sacred Mother Earth.  Perhaps you’ll find her potential in Kali, the Hindu goddess of destruction and rebirth, or Hathor, the Egyptian mother goddess of the sky, or Lilith, the Middle Eastern goddess of abundance, or Selene, the ancient Greek goddess of the moon. Look within today, and perhaps you’ll see sacred Mother Mary, or the compassionate Amma, the Hugging Saint, or the beautiful Avatar/Divine Mother Sri Amma, of the Golden Age Movement.

If you’re a mother to another being (doggie mom, kitty mom), mentor, generous donor, volunteer, loving friend, doting grandma, healer, or teacher, know that you embody the power of love, in all its many motherly forms. Happy Mother’s Day! The Divine Mother in me honors the Divine Mother in you.

Shamanic Extraction: Clear & Shine

Have you, perhaps. been feeling out of sorts, out of balance, anxious, irritable, foggy, or depressed by the challenges of life these days?  Many of us are facing big challenges with health, relationships, healing the past, and/or finances. Because we are all one, we are all experiencing everything, on some level. We’re also collectively grieving the many tragedies of others, which we are very aware of through the media.

It may seem as if the dark side of life is much more visible than it’s ever been before. It seems everywhere, affecting every aspect of life, including health, relationships, nature, and sense of safety. Perhaps the darkness has always been here, to this degree, but because our awareness is increasing with deeper levels of collective awakening, we can’t go back to sleep now. There are points in the awakening process that can seem like long, dark tunnels (I’ve been there often)…but there is also, both at the end of the proverbial tunnel, and always right in front of us, an awareness of that beautiful Light shining brighter than ever. It’s the Light that we want to focus on now!

Where are you at this moment in time? Are you living in Light, struggling with darkness, or somewhere in the middle, and pretty up and down? Well, dear one, you have a choice. The choice is a moment to moment thing, and it might take a renewed commitment on your part to stay high vibrational. Given the chance, our chattering, defensive, and judgmental minds will high-jack the best of spiritual intentions, so let this serve as a reminder: Take a stand to shine your Light and keep seeking more Light!

My clients have been asking me lately, “what can I do to stay energetically clear of all this negativity? What protection is there from intrusive energies and entities?”  Those are very important questions to take seriously now.

Negativity (denser vibrational energy) is bombarding us fairly constantly. We’re exposed to lower-vibrational conditions because of pollution, food toxins, household toxins, news media coverage, political savagery, traffic congestion, hostile family members or co-workers, and, most especially, our own internalized negative messages from childhood or ancestral DNA inheritances!

Based on my 25 years of shamanic experience, I’d have to say that we’re also affected by other-dimensional entities and earth-bound energy cords with others, such as deceased loved ones, or ex-lovers, and, of course, our own disconnected soul parts, which affect our conscious wholeness and awareness of the Oneness. When soul loss occurs, then misplaced, denser energies can move in and they usually do take up residency — affecting well-being in a big way.

Where does this lower-vibrational, misplaced energy go when it moves in? If we are on the receiving or the giving end of it, it often exists trapped within our tissues, organs, and our etheric energy field. This affects body, mind, emotions, and Spirit. The energy we project outward, affects us internally, because we are energetically One. You know this to be true when, for example, you say some unkind words to another, or you are in conflict with a loved one – don’t you feel bad inside, even if you think you are “right”?  We can’t hurt others without hurting ourselves. We can’t harm others by our words, thoughts or actions, without doing harm to ourselves.

“Energy hygiene” is radically important now to keep your physical and spiritual life at a high vibration of health. It’s impossible for one person to suffer, without affecting the multitude. Likewise, a positive shift in one person, positively affects others. A clearing of self-defeating blockages or life-sucking attachments helps clear the collective consciousness. And when we shine our inner Light, the world not only notices our glow, but the vibration of our Light actually lifts others. It is said that one awakened person can affect 100,000 others. Think of the tremendous impact just on your own circle of family and friends when you are clear-headed, open-hearted, and loving!

I often remind my clients that their job is to do the basics:  to tune inward with regularity, take responsibility for your own “stuff,” meditate daily, eat well, sleep well, exercise, have fun, express your creativity, and together we can work on clearing and reclaiming blocked or energetically challenged parts of ourselves that keep us from shining. I encourage you to tune into your own energy field, and observe what’s going on. If you feel like you may have some negativity going on, and need a clearing, I’m offering a new, stand-alone tune-up session – a Shamanic Extraction tune-up, which lasts about 75 minutes and costs $150 when done by phone, or $155 in person.

This session goes deeper than the regular aura clearing sessions I have been offering, which are also quite affective with rebalancing the aura and chakras. However, with a Shamanic Extraction tune-up, I’m calling on my shamanic healing guides to go deeper, to clear karmic energy blockages (from past lives), other-dimensional blockages (entity attachments and intrusions), as well as the present-time aura blockages (usually based on “undigested” emotions) that might be affecting your health, energy level, mood, motivation or thinking. With this Shamanic Extraction session, I go through the same ceremony I use to do the soul retrieval work, calling in the Spirit Guides of the Seven Directions, an indigenous practice. When we call in Spirit, we invite in synchronicities, clarity, and miracles; I see miracles in every session, which is why I love this work. This work comes through me, and it is not “me” who does it.

Just to be clear, typically, the soul retrieval sessions regularly offered, include shamanic extraction, as well as longer discussion time, both before and after the journey, and sometimes, a longer journey time. The soul retrieval & extraction session, combining the two practices, lasts two hours and costs $230 by phone/skype or $240 in person.  Please note that a soul retrieval is NOT part of this 75-minute Shamanic Extraction clearing session.

The reason I’m offering this 75-minute Shamanic Extraction clearing, as a stand-alone session, is that my Spirit Guides told me to do it :-)).  I generally try really hard to listen to them! Also, you might notice that if time or money is a constraint, or if you don’t need a soul retrieval at this particular time, then the Shamanic Extraction clearing might be perfect to get back in balance.

The Shamanic Extraction is done via phone/skype or in person in the Chicago area. As always, if you are unsure which type of session would serve you best, please reach out to me and we can talk about the various options. I know this can be confusing, but I’m always reachable either by email at Paula@FromTheHeartCenter.com or at 773-791-8425.

The important thing, now, is to take a stand for living in the Light, not the darkness. With living in Light, there is an experience of joy and expansion. You feel lighter. You look alive and vibrant. Your relationships are more loving, collaborative, and connected.  When living in darkness, there is suffering, a sense of separateness, and disconnection from whatever is sacred to you…in other words, living in a state of lack. When you find that your thoughts have run amok and are bringing you down, into a state of lack and limitation, please remind yourself that it’s time to clear and shine –and know that you can!

25th anniversary and my own “Me Too” reflections

Over 32 years ago, I was a young realtor looking for a meaningful way to express my deep desire to raise the consciousness of humanity.  Every part of me passionately felt that as a world culture, we were in the midst of a vast, spiritual drought. We were hugely disconnected from nature, each other, and what was sacred.  There was no part of me, however, that consciously knew  how to specifically contribute to changing the world. In fact, I felt lost and overwhelmed by the enormity of the world’s circumstances and was struggling to fit in to the material world.

My real estate work did not feel fulfilling, and my biological clock was ticking at that time. In my mid-thirties, I got married and had a baby. In becoming a mother, I felt tremendous joy and purpose, but there was still something within, urging me to contribute to raising the consciousness of humanity. I didn’t know what to do with that desire, but Spirit clearly did.

A series of very painful circumstances resulted in the dissolution of my marriage. I became a single mother with a very young child. I could no longer keep a realtor’s chaotic, on-call 24/7, schedule with a small child who needed my consistent availability. I didn’t know what to do and prayed hard for answers about how to make money in a fulfilling and mutually beneficial way for my daughter, myself, and humanity.

One day, the answer came very unexpectedly when I ran into a friend who was starting a massage therapy business. I had dabbled a bit in learning to give massage (had taken a few classes just for fun), and my friend suggested I take formal training to learn to be a massage therapist. I contemplated that and decided it was a good idea because I’d have control of my schedule in a way that could support my daughter’s needs. Besides, I had no idea of what else to do!

From that point on, my career unfolded, naturally, in line with my passion to help others grow in happiness and consciousness. I studied Thai massage and became a massage therapist. I loved it! It opened me to a whole new world as a healer. 25 years ago, I officially named my private practice, “From The Heart Center.”  I also learned many other forms of energy work, including shamanic healing. Heeding a strong inner pull, I studied with various shamans and was able to share the powerful ancient art of shamanic healing with my clients.

Years later, another significant shift took place. After discovering the Oneness Blessing (also called Oneness Deeksha), and traveling to India to study with the founders of it, the opportunity to write a book about the Oneness Blessing fell in my lap. A publisher wanted a book about it; I said “yes” to another long-held dream, to write. I am so incredibly grateful to Spirit and to the publisher for that opportunity to contribute, and for overcoming my fears in order to do it!

In retrospect, I see how my Divine guided me through every step to the work I love and the contribution to raising humanity’s consciousness that I longed to make. I was also naturally led to become a certified holistic health coach, and embraced the joy of helping people sync their their lifestyle and health goals with their spiritual values.

The spiritual path is filled with so much synchronicity and unexpected blessings. Not much in my life has been pre-planned. Sometimes guidance has come as a closed door that forced me to seek out another door to open. I’ve had my share of slammed doors and scary moments, but walking through those open doors have only required taking one baby step after another — in order to arrive at a purpose I never could have planned.  It all starts with a very passionate intention and, clearly, Divine grace. If you reflect on your own life, I’m sure you’ll recall the many synchronicities and miracles that have led you to be who you are now. There is so much for each of us to be grateful for!

To be sure, like so many of you, I’ve had many significant challenges along the way. I’ll continue to write about these in future blogs, in hopes that my experiences shed light on your own. But given the current timeliness, I want to briefly mention my own experiences with sexual violations. I’ve had three “Me Too” moments in earlier years of my career, in which I experienced inappropriate sexual behavior from men, and confronted the perpetrators. In two out of these three cases, when I reported my experiences to some people in pertinent “authority” roles, to my surprise, in each case, over 25 other women came forward and corroborated similar experiences with these men.  I won’t go into details here, but the perpetrators involved suffered big repercussions for their actions. There is great benefit to calling out the truth. I hope that inspires you to share your own voice with the world.

I know these traumatic “Me Too” experiences have made me stronger, more courageous about voicing my truth, and have also enabled me to better assist others in doing the deep work of healing trauma. I am particularly passionate about working with survivors of sexual trauma. I would say that the vast majority of my female clients have had sexual trauma, as well as many men, of course.  Additionally, in working with past lives as well as current lives, it’s clear that we all have numerous kinds of trauma locked in our DNA and energy fields. Trauma can be subtle or very obvious; either way, the affect on our lives can be hugely influential. The shamanic soul retrieval and extraction work I do addresses all kinds of trauma, in order to restore our authentic, empowered wholeness. It helps us to achieve greater clarity, contribution, and love.

I know that there is a beautiful, eternal place of peace, hope, creativity, and love within each of us, that none of these traumatic, earth-bound experiences can destroy. It’s a connection to that sacred place within, an innate, intimate connection, that will bring heaven to earth someday.  All the work I do with clients strengthens that connection. It’s in that connection to our Higher Self that guidance, healing, and miracles occur. It’s very important that we all find this place of safety, joy, wholeness, authenticity and inner peace…and go there daily as much as possible. Ideally, we all will come to live there. There, in conscious awareness of our authentic Self, is the profound power of being present to the “what is” of life. That awareness brings us true inner freedom, greater connection, spiritual growth, and blesses all.

The darkness of the separation of humanity from Source has radically manifested in the external world now. The spiritual blight of lower vibrational consciousness persists, but it’s present right along side with the growing global tide of profound awakening. We can’t help but perceive the gravity of physical reality now, even if we wish it weren’t so, and it’s time to accept and confront the darkness in order to open ourselves to greater Light. We are each being called in individual ways to evolve. As always, it’s an inside job first. Each person’s consciousness, actions, and way of being in the world matters and affects thousands of others, now and in future generations.

As bleak as today’s self-destructive situations seem, there is a tidal wave of being “woke” in the mainstream. We are breaking through deeply entrenched unconsciousness. It takes courage and perseverance. We can’t go back to sleep, though some are clearly trying like heck to maintain the status quo, or even worse.

Being awake to the greater role we play in the transformation of the world requires inner work first, along with grace. We must recognize our hurts and wounds, and take steps to heal them. We must take action where our inner voice guides us, and we must call in help from whatever higher Source is sacred and meaningful to each of us.

I’ve been offering my services, from my heart to yours, for over 25 years, to support you in your quest for healing trauma, taking action, and connecting with whatever Sacred Source you’re called to. A shaman is an intercessor between humans and Spirit; The work I do is always to connect you with what is uniquely sacred to you and support you in moving forward to wherever you’re being called. There is no better time to grow in consciousness and joy. If you’d like to have a complimentary conversation with me to discuss how my services might help you, please do not hesitate to reach out. Contact me at paula@fromtheheartcenter.com or 773-791-8425.

Thank you for being open, for being pulled into awakening awareness, and for spreading the word that that help is available to transform your own life first…and then the world! No matter what is going on in our country and the world, please know that you are being drawn to a state of greater joy, aliveness, and inner peace. Have faith, expect miracles, and remember to take it one step at a time!

Intimacy Starts Within

“He who knows others is wise; he who knows himself is enlightened.”
― Lao Tzu

Texting, tweeting, emails, sound bites; we now live in a world in which communication has been reduced to short, quasi-efficient snippets.  Perhaps the use of these things began as a way to stay better connected, but as we all know, that type of connection is very shallow.  It’s good for the basics of getting a communication task done, like announcing that you’re running late.  It’s not good for communicating anything that approaches intimacy.  Our ability to truly connect with each other is slipping away…

Deep Interpersonal communication is becoming a lost art, and, in my opinion, we need to urgently look at the source of that situation –for it is having dire effects on our culture; Our culture does not value or teach authenticity and, thus, people are losing their humanity. It seems to be getting harder and harder to see empathy and compassion in politics and government policies.  We see rampant, senseless crime instead.  We see inhumane treatment of animals, people, and the earth. In fact, we are being systematically programmed to be inauthentic and in denial of our deep disconnection.  We worry about our appearance, our money, our acquisitions, but not our hearts.

My fear is that the daily practice of communing within — with yourself and with whatever is sacred to you (like God, Spirit, the Higher Self) — will disappear like the dinosaurs. Meditation is a beautiful practice of self-intimacy, as is shamanic journeying (a form of meditation).  But one complaint I hear over and over is, “I don’t have time to meditate.”  This indicates that meditation is not valued or prioritized.  I honestly don’t know why it is so hard for us to value sitting still with ourselves.

In addition to entering into a really miraculous flow of one’s life, there are magical, mystical, subtle, and majestic terrains within, waiting to be explored and revealed when we practice daily meditation.  The nuance of subtle feeling states, the whisper of that famous “quiet voice within”, the thrill of synchronicities, ease of connections, unexpected opportunities, radical insights, extraordinary states of bliss…all this inner life is ours by birthright.  But if we don’t claim that territory, it will languish like fertile lands that go unfarmed, leaving us hungry for that which feeds the soul.  In short, we will become an automated, soul-less species.

What delivers us to soulful living, is simply to turn our gaze inward.  That requires pausing from the frenzy of life today.  It requires intention, breathing, and the spirit of an explorer – brave, open, curious, persevering in our quest to know ourselves and to be surprised in fact, by the rich abundance of the present moment.

Without connecting within, we can’t truly connect with others; we can’t share our tender vulnerability, our hungry hearts, or our loving compassion.  We can’t enjoy the comfort, adventure, and thrill of deepening relationships without intimacy.

Start a meditation practice, please, and stick with it!  Even five minutes a day, first thing in the morning, makes a difference.  Seek out what is personally sacred to you – it is a living presence within.  Connect with that – what a profound way to anchor your day and, in fact,  help humanity to step into its greatest potential!

If you need coaching or instruction in establishing a meditation or shamanic journeying practice, I can help you with that.  And if you are in the Chicago area, I’ll be leading a shamanic journey circle on Sunday, May 6, 1:30-4:30pm, in which you can connect intimately with your own spirit, in a loving ceremony of like-minded community.  For more information on that event, check it out here.

FROM THE INSIDE OUT

I just saw the Oscar-nominated film “Ladybird” and it brought me right back to my own teen years, and the teen years of my daughter.  What I loved about the film was that it held the frequently awkward space of intimacy, both within the self and with others, in a beautifully sacred way.  For the buried teen within us, it resurrects and celebrates that uniquely joyous, sometimes painful, hormonally chaotic and precious time of emerging individuality and loss of innocence.  It reminds us of what it feels like to play without knowing the rules; to feel your way through this huge thing that is life.

That teen in me seems to be saying hello lately, even as older age, on paper or by wrinkles, might project an image of wisdom.  I moved two weeks ago, and that particular event turned my life rather upside down. It was a happy, positive move, but it still created an upheaval and thrust me into unknown territory. I’ve felt kind of like an awkward teenager again, just like the heroine of Ladybird. Considering the past year’s political climate, the chaotic weather patterns, and the rollercoaster stock market this month, you might also find yourself feeling, as I do, just a little out of control.

When I was unpacking, I unearthed an old bumper sticker I had stashed away a while ago.  The bumper sticker says, “Let Go, Let Goddess.”  That’s been my mantra since I gratefully (and with perfect synchronicity) found it again!  Letting go and allowing a higher power (whatever that is for you) to carry you through difficult, unknown times is a lifesaver; it can return you to the thrill of living fully. It can make you feel like a teen again – alive – and experiencing your life unfolding with all the tumble of emotions that humans get to have.  As challenging as having emotions can be, I still wouldn’t trade them for numbness.

We all have within us a brilliant force of life and creativity that can’t be squashed.  Like the teen in Ladybird, it can take us into some very uncomfortable emotional places and also to the heights of bliss.  Learning to trust it and let it take the reins, in order to recreate your life, is the essence of walking a spiritual path.  As a teen, that authentic force can move mightily; but as adults, we might need to unlearn a lot of conditioning and release the resistance to change that we acquire as we age — in order to unleash that force’s life-imbuing power.

All the healing work I offer is given with the spirit of supporting you in peeling back the suffocating layers, in order to reclaim your authentic self. Over and over, the repressed divine self will call to you – in your dreams or fantasies, and in real-life opportunities. In order to return to feeling fully alive, we need to listen to that inner voice. We need to let go of the past and risk being present to the whirlwind of the here and now. We need to release the old patterns that prohibit us from taking on life as an unknown adventure, as it was in our earlier years. Finding that sacred, risk-taking hero or heroine within can be downright thrilling.

I love shamanic journeying and guided meditations because they are often a grand adventure.  Just like life, you’ll never know what you’ll find if you just let go and be present within the shamanic journey or meditation. Shamanic journeying and meditation can reveal guidance you’d never dreamed of, and insights that have been beyond your reach.

For the single women reading this, I want to draw your attention to a new virtual course (via conference call) that I’m offering called “Relationship Readiness.  As you may know, I just collaborated with Sue De Santo, Clinical Social Worker and Relationship Coach, to offer an in-person workshop in Chicago.  Now we are continuing our collaboration with this virtual, 4-part class series, so those outside of Chicago can experience it – or those in my area can take it from the comfort of their homes.  I’ll be leading two sessions that are completely shamanic journeying and guided meditation.  It has the potential to change your relationship history from the inside out – to free up that teen in you to attract the kind of relationship you’ve always wanted.  If you are interested, please read more details about it here.  And if you have to miss any of the classes, a recording will be available. Contact me for questions and registration.  Early-bird price of $219 ends on Feb. 14.

Why the Goofy Hearts?

Valentine's DayDid you ever put your heart “out there” and get what feels like a big, empty, no-response from the universe?  I mean, a big, invalidating, nothing.  That’s happened to me in my dating life, in my creative efforts, in friendships at times, and in my career.  When we take the risk of opening ourselves, to be seen, and to be vulnerable, we risk feeling hurt when the offerings of our open heart are not appreciated or returned.  When this happens, our inner defense patterns and heart walls can get thicker. This process can start in childhood, when our inner-kid’s natural joy, exuberance, and loving nature got stomped on, perhaps by stressed-out, dysfunctional, or shut-down parents, bullying kids, or by the educational system itself. We learn to keep our guard up, to be like our peers, and to behave as parents, teachers, and other authority figures expect.

In dating, if we open up to another person, and they don’t match that emotional availability, there is a tendency for us to retreat to a place of isolation, resignation, or hopelessness. We take another person’s non-interest way too personally most of the time.  Truth is, it always has nothing to do with us.  But our vulnerable heart is like a friendly puppy – it just wants to love and be loved – and our ego-mind is like a soldier – it’s job is to preserve and protect us from harm.  Thus, heart and mind become bogged down waging a battle of inner-conflict, with an unconscious strategy operating to prevent future pain.

Staying in our comfort zones usually brings little gain.  To risk vulnerability and risk failing, is also to invite in huge success and greater happiness.  To be blunt, you usually have to take risks to achieve greater fulfillment and success (whatever success means to you).  Keeping our lives risk-free and playing it safe only serves to keep that status-quo predictability going….and for many of us self-growth warriors, the status quo is not where our spirit likes to hang out.  The spirit is always trying to move forward – to greater expansion.  For our true essence is a part of the universe, and as science has shown, we live in an ever-expanding universe.  The way of the Universal Spirit is one of constant change and expansion.  That expansive drive and ever-changing nature lives within our heart.

As you’ve been reading here, my friend and colleague Sue De Santo and I are giving a course called “Dating, Sexuality & Empowerment.” See all the details HERE.  It’s designed to help women break through those heart-protecting patterns and step more fully into their authentic, radiant, self-empowerment. When we break through the mental control that’s trying to preserve our safety with old, self-protecting patterns, our inner light comes pouring through.

Having inner freedom endows us with an attractive force of love and joy that beams out to the world. We begin to flow with that ever-expanding universe within and without us….life brings to our door exactly what we need to keep circulating that joy and love of our spirit.  We attract the right people (including life partners), opportunities, and conditions to better serve the world and circulate our gifts, talents, and unique contributions.

To promote this course, Sue and I made a video to put on facebook and youtube.  That’s what practitioners like us do to market our services.  Just part of the job.  But don’t think that it is ever easy for people like us to wear our hearts on our sleeves when we write blogs, when we promote our courses, sessions, and all the offerings we do.  Most of us who do this have had zero training in marketing – though we’ve had lots of training in the services we offer, but still this type of work seems to require continual self-promotion to spread the word.  That self-promotion is risky.  Speaking for myself, my particular shamanic and holistic coaching offerings are not mainstream, to say the least.  The older and wiser I get about the value of my contributions, however, the more I’m willing to be authentic, vulnerable, and open about what I do — in a world that is generally hugely resistant to change, complementary healing techniques, and vulnerability.

So Sue and I made this video. Please check it out HERE and see the goofy hearts in it. At first we accidentally put a hearts filter on the video, chuckled about it, and then kept it on, with an intent to attract attention and lighten up this topic we’re teaching. To my surprise, it’s been received with kind of a glaringly silent, non-response on facebook.

I’m used to putting up simple photos of trees and getting a bunch of “likes” or “loves”…but I’m getting very little response with this video. The silence is deafening, as they say.  Perhaps some people are offended, don’t get it, or whatever.  But to me, it’s pretty darn goofy and a bit awkward to watch, and I thought I’d at least get a laughing emoji out of someone. However, I’m not taking it personally.  In fact, I’m laughing at myself each time I view it and see my own awkwardness and those goofy hearts. It’s my coyote medicine, for sure. Coyote brings me the gift of finding humor in my own silly antics.

Actually, coyote medicine aside, this course touches a powerful topic with very timely resonance to the awakening of the Divine Feminine now.  I’m absolutely in awe of the fantastic rise of women’s sense of spiritual empowerment now and I’ve always been eager to contribute to that awakening. From women suffragettes to feminists, to the path of the spiritual warriors among us, including the “me too’s”, this is deeply exciting and hopeful phenomenon to observe.

One thing I’ve learned along the way is to carry a certain “lightness of being” as a valued tool on the spiritual path.  If you can find a little loving humor about this mysterious drama of being human, it’s a very healthy thing.  And we know the power of levity at Halloween time, when we dress up to laugh at scary ghosts (the omnipresent reality of death), threatening pirates, ominous witches, and the super-heroes who fight the evils of crime, etc.  Or when we try to dress up like a 1940’s movie star, like I did in 2009.  I loved having fun with a bit of that Hollywood glam, probably because I needed to let that glam shadow side of me out to shine!

Halloween2009

If you can laugh at yourself, and at the self-protective patterns devised by the ego, then you are not identified with that ego.  You are not your mind!  You are not that hurt, scared child who wasn’t seen, wasn’t appreciated, or somehow needed to be “controlled” by stressed out authority figures. To find humor in what is awful, sad, and downright life-invalidating, is to be free of those darker inner forces that keep us feeling frustrated, stuck, and less than miraculous. To be free inwardly is to experience the true bliss that is our essence, no matter how others treat us.  No matter whether they like our videos or not!

I’ll let you in on a little secret:  teachers always teach what they need to learn for themselves…and they usually get their lessons especially when they are preparing for a course. Being a good teacher, healer, coach, or therapist is to be a constant student of life and love. A good teacher is a model for that which they teach. I hope I can do that — I want to inspire you to live ever-expandingly beyond the status quo of your comfort zones in order to be a thriving, joyful human being.  We are not our fears, our resignation, our need to please, or our self-protection.  We are love and Light, eternally.
