Happy Solstice – and I have a gift for you in honor of the return of the Light!
If you’re reading this on Tuesday, December 22 or later, you survived the shortest day and the longest night of the year on December 21, which is recognized as the Winter Solstice. Tonight, I’m feeling just a tad bit en-Lightened as I witness the clock measuring the turning point of Darkness into Light. Hooray, we’re headed back into Light! If I seem a bit giddy, my apologies, but it’s truly because darkness has been such a relentless foe in 2015. For me, it felt like Darkness chased me in the proverbial desert for 40 years. I know some people say it’s good to “befriend” the Darkness, but I believe in politely declining its invitations to linger…and then armed with as much spiritual power that might be harnessed, getting the heck out of its life-sucking clutch.
It’s been a “dark” year for so many, even at the height of summer’s glorious sun. The darkness of the Solstice metaphorically represents the inner darkness as well as the absence of daylight, and many people, myself included, have been struggling with particularly “dark” aspects of the inner realms in 2015. This darkness has fear at its root. The outer world always reflects the collective inner world, and our chaotic, fearful planet continues to reflect an over-growth of spiritual darkness in all the murders, wars, poverty, plundering, and conflict happening now. Yet, we persevere in our desire for peace and joy, and I’d like to commend the courage, resilience, and strength that constant perseverance takes.
Must we all go into the desert of despair at times? It’s hard to avoid. But as dark as it might get, and as devoid of hope as it might feel, it’s important to keep rediscovering the Light as it returns over and over again. Actually, we all have many light switches available – at all times – to turn on the Light…the trick is to remember we have the power to flip the switch whenever we need to do that. That power lies within each of us.
We can turn on the Light ourselves through daily meditation practice – and I can’t recommend that enough. Just sitting with our feelings can help them move through. Just observing the mind in action frees us from the mind’s grip – breaks up identification with it. But when we feel overwhelmed or stuck, we might turn to others who share other sources of Light, including: energy work, readings, healing modalities…in fact, there are so many beautiful, energy-based systems available now to shift fear into love, and stress into peace. Also, just sitting with a friend or in a group, and letting yourself feel safe and seen can be lifesaving.
If you resist these helpful practices, ask yourself if your resistance and suffering is serving your best interests. The answer is always going to be that resistance only drags you and those around you deeper into darkness. Please find the courage to dare to change. Do everything in your power to move toward the Light. The world’s future depends on it – truly. Even picking yourself off the sofa and taking a walk, or calling a friend is a good step.

Just pick whatever meditation calls to you and let yourself be guided to some inner peace. It’s such a beautifully easy way to allow change to take you over.
I won’t kid you — we all know that it can sometimes feel like a like a moment to moment, life or death struggle when we are really depressed, or sad, or anxious…And I don’t want to minimize the suffering that we go through, but in addition to all these tools that can flip the Light switch, one of the best places to fall into is the warm, heart-hug of gratitude.
I’ve been in times of fear and hopelessness, when all paths “out” have looked like dead-ends; but then one little baby step toward Light can shift the heaviness. One little step in the direction of gratitude…just speaking words of gratitude can elevate and reveal new opportunities, changes in perception, and unexpected acts of grace. Even if you don’t feel grateful, just saying the words, “I am grateful for …” have a mighty power to ease your mind out of the garbage. Gratitude is a veritable lifeline to inner equilibrium and to the self-love from which sanity is reborn. Gratitude softens the pain. It reminds us that we have, indeed, been blessed before by the universe, even if we’re feeling down now….and plants the seeds of hope that we can feel blessed again. And we will be!
