What’s Your Body Saying? 3 Suggestions for Listening

My heart has been with all those affected by the reality of these unprecedented hurricanes, flooding, and fires…and we’ve all been affected, of course. But I can only imagine the extreme challenges of living in the wake of the devastation. To those still struggling, I hope you are experiencing the collective love and concern.

These past few weeks of massive destruction have rattled the shreds of any denial lurking in our collective awareness of the power of nature.

But as bad as it’s been, to those who look, the power of prayer and faith has also been affirmed.

The manifestations of Mother Earth are intimately tied to the consciousness of those who inhabit the planet. With the reality of widespread disrespect and abuse of nature, there’s no mystery in our Earth Mother’s revolt.  Scientists have warned of it…as have mystics and those not blinded by financial interest, fear, and greed.  And to those anchored in faith, there is hope for this troubled planet…but only with a change in consciousness and a corrected course of action.

Likewise, the human body, when treated disrespectfully and with abuse, does also revolt.

Researchers and those who have studied the ways of the body, can tell you that if you ingest sugar, unhealthy fats, chemicals, and hormone laded food, then the body is weakened and creates disease.  If you pile stress upon stress on these vulnerable nervous systems (without interventions like quality sleep, relaxation and perhaps even meditation), there will be trouble.  If you don’t mend broken relationships and frequently disregard the need for exercise, there will be consequences.

Like the fate of this planet, we are creating our destiny in each choice we make.

You are not your body. You are embodied consciousness. You’re a sacred, magnificent spirit with infinite possibilities, housed in a body created from what you eat, feel, believe, and do. The physical body beams as much light and love as the quality of its cellular infrastructure can hold.  Are you in need of an upgrade so that the vibration of your body temple moves into greater alignment with the beauty of your soul?

After years of struggling with my own personal challenges of digestion and back pain, I’ve learned the hard way that the body is always talking…but am I fully listening? Am I truly present and embodied …or am I ungrounded, in denial, and off in the la-la land of the mind?

This body talks and you better believe, I listen now.

Experience can bring wisdom; This body is my beloved collaborator in the light and love I want to share while I’m alive, and I can’t do that well if I’m struggling with suffering and ill health.  How is your own relationship with the physical home of your spirit?  Many of us are very disconnected from the sources of nourishment of body, mind, and spirit.

To listen to the needs of the body is self-love in action, particularly if you are hoping to sustain a high-quality lifespan!  I personally don’t obsess about a long life, though I would be very happy to be blessed with one. What I do passionately desire is a quality of life that is vibrant, flexible, expansive, and as un-medicated as possible.  Since the future of insurance is rather uncertain and our country’s medical care system is a complex web of politics and money-laden interests, the time to take charge of our wholeness and health is right now!

Physical and emotional pain and disease is the body’s wake-up call, but how about taking a pro-active stance right now, before you’re stuck with a crisis comparable to Hurricane Irma?

The physical body is the outermost manifestation of your consciousness.   Given your full attention, the body will talk to you loud and clear, telling you about its needs, wants, and emotional state.  Start  communicating seriously and get curious about what it tells you. Then make a course correction to get in balance, if necessary!

Here are 3 very important suggestions for attending to your body’s communications, while at the same time, demonstrating some powerful self-love:

  1. Sit down and close your eyes. Turning within, do a quick inner body scan, from head to toes. Notice areas of tightness, stress, or pain. Using deep breathing, send some love and relaxation to the parts of your body that are unhappy. Breathe into the discomfort. Ask your body to let go, and send it some soothing words of love. Great to do this periodically while working at a desk or gazing at your computer, phone, or television for hours!

  2. Ask yourself, “what do I already know I need to do for my body and health?” We know how to heal ourselves! We know we need exercise, less stress, better relationships, better eating…So start doing it! Make a decision to take action instead of procrastinating. If you’re struggling with moving forward, get yourself a holistic health coach and healer to help you break through! (sorry, I couldn’t resist throwing some self-promotion in!) Take this inner-knowing seriously. Like any significant, intimate relationship, your relationship with your body requires daily attention, respect, and devotion.

  3. Feel your feelings all the way through. Feelings are the result of the body’s interaction with life. Unfortunately, many of us run from our feelings to avoid discomfort. Trapped feelings in the body create pain, disease, anxiety, depression, and unconsciousness. To feel is human, but to stifle feelings is to create trouble down the road. Don’t take your feelings out on anyone else. Don’t let feelings build up within, only to leak out later as criticism, snarky digs, or outright anger. Instead, when you have a moment, sit down and really feel your sadness, frustration, fear and anger. Breathe into the feelings, get close to them, stay with them, and you’ll see that the feelings dissipate and release. Then your spirit is returned to inner peace and joy.
